An operations partner that does the work.
Wholeshift is a boutique practice for organizations that need to modernize how they run. Founded and led by Jesse Smith in Milwaukee, WI. Working with clients across the US.
What we do.
Most consulting promises strategy and delivers slides. We deliver working systems — CRMs your team actually uses, marketing engines you can run yourself, automations that quietly eliminate the worst part of someone's week. Strategy is part of every engagement, but the deliverable is always a thing that works on Monday morning.
How we work.
Partner-led. Jesse runs every engagement personally — discovery, design, the build, the handoff. No gatekeeping, no junior handoff, no offshore subcontractor. Some projects bring in named specialists for specific work (design polish, copywriting, advanced data migrations), but the principal stays accountable end-to-end and writes most of the system. That puts a real ceiling on how many clients we serve at once. It also means the person on your discovery call is the person building your system three weeks later.
You see working pieces every week, not a slide deck at the end of six months. What we ship is yours from launch — code, data, credentials, documentation, in formats you can build on. We're handing off an asset, not extending a service contract.
What we believe.
The right tool is the one that fits your team — not the one we know best. We have opinions, but they're informed by how your people actually work, not by who pays us a commission.
AI when it fits, not because it sells. We don't lead with AI and we don't put it in solutions that don't need it. When AI does fit the work — summarization, drafting, plain-English search — we embed it where it earns its keep and we handle the model selection and cost. When it doesn't, we leave it out. Not every problem is an AI problem.
Small by design. We're growing carefully because the alternative is the consulting-firm trap: hire fast, manage instead of build, lose the thing that made the work good in the first place. We'd rather stay small and stay good.
Who we work with.
Small businesses (typically 5–50 people, 3+ years old) ready to consolidate the tooling drift that comes with growth. And mission-driven nonprofits balancing donors, grants, and program data who deserve systems built around their mission instead of generic "nonprofit CRM" software.
About Jesse.
Since 2013, a career in the operations behind revenue and growth — customer and donor databases, multichannel marketing, ad operations, attribution systems. The same machinery whether you're running a Wisconsin small business, a national political campaign, or a nonprofit at scale. The arc: political fundraising first, then leadership as Vice President of Development and, later, Vice President of Development and Engagement at two organizations — administering the databases and CMS platforms, running marketing and advertising across every channel that mattered. MBA.
Knows a thing or two about systems that don't work for the people inside them — nonprofit work makes you an expert. Bootstrap labor by nature: you pick the tool you can afford, find out down the road it's the wrong fit, then spend the next year working around its limits. Run that loop a few times and you stop trusting the demo — you start asking what the tool will feel like in year three, not what the price is in month one. That attitude is the whole point of Wholeshift. Started it because the gap between what nonprofits and small businesses actually need and what most consulting shops sell them is wider than it should be. Lives in Milwaukee. Works anywhere the people need help.
Curious if we're a fit?
Discovery calls are 30 minutes, no deck. We listen first.
